It is used to demonstrate the effect of magnetic field on a current carrying conductor. A metal rod is mounted vertically on a moulded plastic case. A permanent magnet is fixed on a vertically moveable platform acrossmetal rod. A DC current of about 7A induces segnificant displacement in the movable conductor.

Two brass rails mounted parallel to each other in a clear acrylic stand and have 4mm sockets at one of their ends. A copper rod is supportd on both the ralis and is free to role along their length. A U shaped magnet when positioned between the rails with the current flowing through the rails, results in the movement of the copper rod.
